In both cases, deputies will become designated contact people when school and township officials have issues arise that require police assistance. Murphy said deputies assigned to Hartland Township will provide "full service" coverage, while deputies assigned in the Howell area communities will be focused more on "community outreach" and providing township's support enforcing local ordinances, managing traffic and other assistance. Howell Public Schools and surrounding townships are also contracting with the county to share a dedicated officer to provide services eight hours a day on weekdays. The township and school districts will share the cost. 1, is a partnership between the township, Hartland Consolidated Schools and Charyl Stockwell Academy District, which has a school in the township. On Tuesday, Hartland Township officials approved a contract with the county sheriff's office for two deputies to patrol the schools and rest of the township a total of 12 hours a day. Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy said the scope of the deputies' duties will differ in the two areas, but in both cases they will provide a police presence at local schools and provide additional coverage in the communities at-large.
In addition, Howell Public Schools, and Marion, Oceola and Genoa townships also have signed contracts for similar coverage, and Howell Township officials are expected to decide at a future meeting whether to do so after a review by the township's attorney. Hartland Township, in partnership with two school districts, has a new contract with the Livingston County Sheriff's Office for deputies to patrol schools and the rest of the township daily. Police coverage is set to increase in three local school districts and several townships this summer.
